I’ve been a professional musician since my teen years and have toured nationally and internationally. But there is another side to what I do. For over 30 years I’ve been teaching piano and guitar to hundreds of students, ages 5 to adult.

I’m probably best known as blues/jazz/roots-rock guy but I enjoy teaching all styles (pop, rock, country, jazz, TV/film music, video game themes) and can turn anything into a lesson. I’m patient with beginners, and have found I can help anyone improve on their instrument. I sometimes use lesson books, but often create personalized lessons for each student using a combination of notation, transcriptions, video and lots of listening/playing by ear. Students can also access my youtube video lessons.

Lessons can be 1/2 hour, 45 minutes or 1 hour and my fee is $60/hour. Interested? Let’s chat. Email at al@alhillblues.com.

I have to say my progression with Al has been more than I could have thought. In a teacher he’s the best I could ask for and more, and his best qualities are his great ability to take any student in almost any direction they want with music.” - Philip

Oliver

“My lessons with Al changed me from a complete beginner into a real player, capable of writing and playing songs by ear. I have learned an incredible amount from him, including music theory, playing technique, and knowledge on music history. Out of all of the music teachers and classes I have taken, Al has been by far the best teacher, with impressive knowledge, patience, and skill.” - Oliver

"I like taking piano with Al because he lets me focus on the songs I like. He allows me to learn new things in the general instruction book as well as what I want to learn on my own." - Anna

My sons, Declan and Callum, have been taking piano lessons with Al for six years. Al is an engaging and patient teacher who works hard to keep them both interested by teaching them songs that they choose. He works with each of their strengths with different teaching styles. For example, my older son reads music better than his younger brother, who has a better ear. They have both blossomed in their playing in the last couple of years and I credit Al for helping them to stick with it. They never wanted to quit because they love their lessons with him. Thanks Al!” - Julie Jones

Al had really sparked my interest in developing my fledgling piano skills. His humor and calm demeanor are really valued as I tend to be slow to learn new things. He is a very patient teacher! His knowledge of piano styles and techniques is exceptional. I can honestly say that each lesson I’ve had with Al has given me weeks worth of things to work on and develop. I’m playing far better than I ever have and I am enjoying it immensely these days. I’m using my time in self isolation to work on my new chops… Thanks Al! - ” - Dave Duncan, National award-winning songwriter/musician

“I found Al to be a patient and knowledgeable teacher.  He has a knack for creating arrangements that make his student's sound years ahead of their ability.” - Kathy
